Commercial milestone of quantum computing: Intel launches Maling low temperature control chip

Time:2020-03-16| Author:Ai芯天下

Quantum computing is good but difficult

Although the computing power of quantum computers is amazing, they can create the best computing power that traditional computers can only provide in a few minutes.

But judging from the prototype drawings disclosed by various companies, they are all huge monsters with hundreds of control lines densely packed. This status quo is expected to undergo a fundamental change from today.

The challenge of quantum computing at this stage is that it can only work at temperatures close to the freezing point. Intel is trying to change this situation.

Intel has expanded the number of qubits required for quantum utility to thousands of bits, and has made steady progress in making commercially viable quantum computing a reality.

Intel Research Institute released the first low-temperature control chip code-named "Ma Ling" to accelerate the development of full-stack quantum computing systems. As an important milestone on the road to the practical application of quantum, Ma Ling has achieved the control of multiple qubits and pointed out the direction for the expansion of larger systems.

The real bottleneck of commercial scale quantum computing

The Horse Rdige chip is based on Intel’s 22-nanometer FinFET process and is jointly developed by Intel and QuTech (co-founded by the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and the National Academy of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands).

The manufacturing of the control chip is done internally by Intel, which will greatly improve Intel’s ability to design, test, and optimize commercially viable quantum computers. This new low-temperature control chip will accelerate the development of full-stack quantum computing systems, marking a new milestone in the development of commercially viable quantum computers.

Intel recognizes that quantum control is a core link in the development of large-scale commercial quantum systems, which is why Intel invests in quantum error correction and control technology.

Through Horse Ridge, Intel has developed a scalable control system that can greatly speed up testing and realize the potential of quantum computing.

In the race to realize the functions and potential of quantum computers, researchers have paid extensive attention to the manufacture of qubits and built test chips to prove that a small number of qubits operating in a superposition mode can increase computing power exponentially.

But in the early development of quantum hardware, such as in the design, testing and characterization of Intel silicon spin qubit and superconducting qubit systems, Intel discovered that the main bottleneck for realizing commercial-scale quantum computing is interconnection and control of electronic devices.
This is an important milestone for Intel's multi bit quantum control system, and it can point out the practical direction of horse in the future.

Solve the problem of working at absolute zero

At present, researchers have been working on building small-scale quantum systems to prove the potential of quantum devices. In these attempts, researchers rely on existing electronic tools and high-performance computer rack-level instruments to connect the quantum system in the cryo-freezer with traditional computing devices that adjust the performance of the qubits and program the system. However, this extensive control wiring for each qubit will constrain the capabilities of quantum systems, making it impossible to scale to the hundreds or thousands of qubits required to prove quantum practicality, let alone commercially viable quantum solutions. Millions of qubits are needed.

Horse Ridge is designed as a radio frequency (RF) processor to control the qubits running in the refrigerator. Its programming instructions correspond to the operations of the basic qubits. These instructions will be converted into electromagnetic microwaves that can manipulate the state of the qubits. pulse.

Horse Ridge is a highly integrated, mixed-signal low-temperature system-on-chip (SoC) with a silicon area of 4 x 4mm2 and uses Intel’s 22nm FFL (FinFET low power) CMOS technology. Horse Ridge integrates static random access memory (SRAM), digital core, and analog/radio frequency (RF) circuits into a single package, and uses microwave pulses to manipulate the state of qubits in the quantum system.
Through horse ridge, Intel fundamentally simplifies the control electronics needed to run quantum systems. By using highly integratedSystem chip(SoC)To replace these huge instruments will simplify the system design, allow the use of complex signal processing technology to speed up the setting time, improve the qubit performance, and enable the system to efficiently expand to more qubits.
